The Cranky Vegan aka Jake Conroy is a long-time activist, designer, and writer currently residing in Seattle, WA USA. He has helped organize and participated in successful local, regional, national and international pressure campaigns. He also helped build the foundation of the grassroots campaign SHAC USA, and was subsequently arrested by the US government for his role. Dubbed the SHAC7, Jake and his codefendants were found guilty after a lengthy trial and he was sentenced to 4 years in federal prison.
As co-founder and Vice President of Ocean Defense International (ODI), Jake led the first ever disruption of a whale hunt in US coastal waters. By piloting various vessels and directly putting themselves between the hunted and hunter, Jake and ODI reduced the anticipated kill of 20 Pacific Gray whales down to one.
Currently, Jake works at the Rainforest Action Network, an international organization using pressure campaigns to stop rainforest deforestation, fossil fuel extraction, and support human rights. He can also be found on You Tube, Instagram and Facebook @ The Cranky Vegan, speaking at universities and events around the world and working on the projects he co-founded, Bite Back Magazine and the blog Plant Based on a Budget.
Jake’s story of campaigning against animal testing is coming to screens very soon in the Joaquin Phoenix produced film The Animal People.
